FRIENDS OF WHALLEYMOOR WOODLAND

Our Story

Whalley Moor Woodland, which was once the location of the Calderstones railway, is now a public ā€œopen spaceā€.Ā  It was transferred to the ownership of Ribble Valley Borough Council in 2003 following the development of the nearby former Calderstones Hospital site and the creation of the housing development now known as Calderstones Park.

This unique patch of wooded space can only be used for the purposes of public open space and for public sport and recreation.Ā  The ā€œFriends of Whalley Moor Woodlandā€ is the community interest group formed in 2008 to create a valuable link between the local community and the Council to maintain the woodland and preserve its use for future generations.

Photo Competition

We are running a woodland competition for local residents with two prizes;

We are looking for a photo of a "woodland creation" made using materials from our woods - this could be a bug/animal nest, a stick person or any other creative item.

We are looking for photos which we can use on our website, taken within Whalley Moor Woodland - birds, animals, insects, trees.

We will be running this all summer so until 3rd September.

Please email all enteries to whalleymoor@outlook.com with name, address and age if you are entering a child.

A good spotting place is the 'wild meadow' area off Calder Vale area.

"Keep Out" area

Just to let you all know the reasons for the signs and fencing.

Itā€™s a contaminated site from the former hospital gas boilers called Blue Billy.

'Blue Billy is a chemical or mineral deposit often encountered in contaminated land to this day. It is associated with coal gasification and is common in gas works and coke works throughout the UK'

The area had been fenced off in the past but due to plants overgrowing it had fallen over.Ā  RVBC is aware of the situation.
