Whalley Remembers

Tracking Ā  ServiceĀ  Connections

It started from here, when we planted a tree on the Green in 2014 to commemorate those that lost their lives in WW1.

Dedication Service to unveil the Plaque

Connections that link then with now

"Locals are determined to keep memories from fading by taking on the huge task of identifying not just those who did not survive the trenches but the soldiers who made it home only to later die from their wounds."

There is some recognition of the role of the hospital onĀ  a stone outside the Calderstones hospital opening onto Mitton road. There is also a 'blue plaque' on Mitton Road, where it goes over the old rail-line. But we wanted something that would make us think more about what went on a century ago round here in the Woodland.

We came up with idea of having plaque modelled on this oneĀ  in Whalley Rail Station. Children in Whalley Primary school worked with Alastair to produce this 'healing journey' from the inferno of war in red to the tranquil green here in Whalley. All manner of coaches of different colours (red orange blue) came over the local viaduct. The soldiers then changed their khaki uniforms into blue ones.

We wanted something low key that fitted with the station and any rail archeology we could find in the Woodland.Ā

We wanted the Woodland to help conjure up the memory of those soldiers.Ā
