Commemorating WW1 Hospital
Tracking Ā ServiceĀ Whalley Remembers Connections Remembering Herbert Miller
Whalley Woodland is on the site that was once Calderstones Hospital. This had a particular part to play during WW1 when it was known as St Mary's.Ā
During those war years over 56,000 wounded soldiers were bought along a railway line in the woodland cutting (above) for treatment.Ā
We wanted to commemorate this.
We came up with idea of having plaque modelled on this oneĀ in Whalley Rail Station. Children in Whalley Primary school worked with Alastair to produce this 'healing journey' from the inferno of war in red to the tranquil green here in Whalley.Ā
All manner of coaches of different colours (red orange blue) came over the local viaduct. The soldiers then changed their khaki uniforms into blue ones.
